Are college students learning? Is the Church?
According to a new report entitled “Academically Adrift…”, college students seem to be learning less than what their predecessors did. According to this report:
•35% of students report spending five or fewer hours per week studying alone. Yet, despite an “ever-growing emphasis” on study groups and collaborative projects, students who study in groups tend to have...

Book Closing - Licks of Love by John Updike
It took me a while to get through this book, I won’t lie. The books is basically divided into two parts. The first half is short stories, almost entirely dealing with the subject of marital infidelity. The second half is a novella “Rabbit Remembered” which is a sequel to one of Updike’s earlier stories about Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom.
I had never read an...

PJ's Time Log - Tuesday

Nine to Nine Thirty: Got here late (9:15ish), opened up, did a few calendar inputs
Nine Thirty to Ten Thirty: Mentoring session on the phone, talked about stuff that is getting rolled out at University Lutheran and that I need to take a half day sometime in my week to reflect and devote, wrote about Jesus' speaking with authority and what that looks like for us as His Baptized people.
Ten Thirty to Eleven: Reading: "Surprised by Hope" by NT Wright
Eleven to Twelve Thirty: Correspondence and calendarization
Twelve Thirty to One: Lunch and TED - http://www.ted.com/talks/amber_case_we_are_all_cyborgs_now.html , a little facebook for fun, talked to the pastor filling in for me on Sunday
One to Two Thirty: Meeting Planning (PM's, Elders), Statistical Report to District, begin work on +Vespers+ series for tomorrow
Two Thirty to Three: Read "Christian Atheist" by Craig Groeshel

The "Huh?" after Hallelujah
So this week the Psalm ends awkwardly:
Psalm 147:20
He (God) declares his word to Jacob, his statutes and rules to Israel. He has not dealt thus with any other nation; they do not know his rules. Hallelujah!
The rest of Psalm 147 is kind of a “Winter Praise Song”. It’s got snow and cold, and some thanksgiving for shelter (against invading armies in this case, not...

Testify!
Lutherans aren’t real well known for giving testimonies. However, in other Christian churches, the practice of “giving your testimony” is a pretty common thing.
Now I think normally the reason that we don’t really encourage “testimonies” in the Lutheran church is that they can tend to take the focus off Christ and put it on yourself, or your...
