Book Closing: On Being A Theologian of the Cross
Forde’s concise book of reflections on the Hiedelberg Disputation that become the foundation for the Lutheran concept of “Theology of the Cross” is a short read that is relatively easy to read, given the complexity of the document that it seeks to unpack (the Hiedelberg Disputation).
In in, Forde separates Luther’s 29 Theses into manageable chunks that then form...

Book Closing: After Our Likeness by Miroslav Volf
To use the analogy of water, some books are like pouring water into your head, drinking it in, other books are like jumping into a body of water and swimming around. “After our Likeness” is the latter.
Volf’s edited dissertation on eccelsiology is a dense read, as most dissertations are. In it, he attempts to discuss how the Western (and largely American) model of the...

Book Opening: Driving Like Crazy by PJ O'Rourke
Borders went out of business and I couldn’t get out there right away. I didn’t find much for cheap, but I did find a PJ O’Rourke book - which is always a sure bet. Chapter by chapter, you meet characters for whom the heat of war has further fractured the cracks and fault lines in their souls -...

Patriotism
What is it about the US? Today is July 4th, the celebration of the Independence of the United States of America. Today is my holiday in a lot of ways, I’m a U.S. citizen who lives in the U.S. and claims all of the freedoms and responsibilities of my citizenship. Yet it is not nationalism that gives me my patriotism. It is not my role as citizen that really drives my celebrations today....
Whatcha been up to?
I’ve been writing a lot “off line” these days trying to get started on a book’s worth of material cross referencing Luther’s Theology of the Cross and Strauss & Howe’s generational theories. It’s been lots of fun, but I haven’t written here on my blog as much.
I’ve also noticed that my goal of 500 words per day does leave me with time...
